Position:                    Youth Homework Assistant

Department:            ConnCAT

Location:                   4 Science Park, New Haven CT

Hours:                        Part Time – Non-Exempt

Reports to:               Youth and Community Program Manager

Salary:                        $10.10/hour

Hours:                        Monday-Friday 2:30pm-6:00pm

OVERVIEW:

The Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology (ConnCAT) is a nonprofit organization based in the Newhallville section of New Haven.  Our mission is to inspire, motivate, and prepare youth and adults for educational and career advancement.  Under Connecticut law, Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology (ConnCAT) is an “At-Will” employer.  Accordingly, the duration of an employee’s tenure with Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology (ConnCAT) can be ended at the discretion of either the Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology (ConnCAT) CEO and President, ConnCORP President or the involved employee.       

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Homework Assistants will engage and provide support to students and Instructors daily.  Homework Assistants will receive instruction to the program’s policies and procedures and provide individualized and group academic support in reading, language arts and mathematics.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Support youth completion of academic homework & reading
  • Assist in transition from homework block to enrichment block
  • Maintain supplies and equipment necessary for homework block
  • Create and sustain a supportive environment conducive to work completion and reading

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

There are no supervisory responsibilities with this position

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in a school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee may be required to frequently lift and/or move items over 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Provide recent College Transcript or High School Report Card
  • Some college/ individuals currently enrolled in college may apply
  • 2 Reference Letters (professional and character)

  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group setting to youth, teachers and other staff
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Possess excellent communication skills
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students or parents
  • Ability to work as a team
  • Be able to address adverse behaviors in an effective manner
  • Background check required
