BioLAUNCH

program overview

Course Length

  • 3 weeks  Pre-Training Academy
  • 4 months   Laboratory Instruction & Training
  • 2-3 months   Industry Internship
  • High performance in training is needed to progress from one training stage to the next, including interviewing for an industrial internship.

Class Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM
Internship schedule determined by intern site  


Course Outline (changes based on industry training priorities)

  • Environmental Health and Safety 
  • Lab equipment maintenance and calibration 
  • Pipetting 
  • Weighing, volumetric measurement, calculating dilutions 
  • Autoclaving 
  • Centrifugation 
  • Ordering, receiving, inventory management, asset tracking 
  • Preparing shipping/customs documentation 
  • pH adjustment 
  • Aseptic technique 
  • Quadrant isolation, spreads, DNA prep 
  • Mycoplasma surveillance testing 
  • Spectrophotometry 
  • Biosafety cabinet (BSC) use 
  • Live-dead cell counting 
  • Microscopy Handling dry ice
  • Animal Husbandry 
  • Managing glassware 
  • Build a Buffer or Media 
  • Grow bacterial cells 
  • Prep DNA/protein 
  • Transformation/Transfection 
  • Grow mammalian cells 
  • Western blotting

    (coursework will also include keyboarding, computers, word processing, communications, professional development, financial literacy)


Applicants who would do well in training would be those with:

Good basic reading and math skills (high school algebra)

Aptitude and inclination for hands-on work

High consistent attendance and punctuality

High quality customer service

Ability to follow detailed instructions and complete tasks on schedule

Willingness to learn new things

Comfort working independently and as part of a team

Ability to work seated for approximately 80% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 80% of a typical working day

Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height


INTERNSHIP

Internships allow ConnCAT students to demonstrate their skills, perform assignments practiced during didactic training and function as a bioscience lab intern. It is important to us that internship experiences are mutually beneficial. Thus internship sites can expect professionalism and productivity from ConnCAT interns. 


Upon successful completion of the didactic training, students will complete a 2-month internship as a bioscience laboratory operations intern.
